Casa Amatller. House museum. Modernist building created for the
Antoni Amatller chocolatier family by prominent modernist architect
Josep Puig i Cadafalch. It is on fashionable Passeig de Gracia street number 41 next to another modernist masterpiece Casa Batllo by Gaudi. Casa Amatller is one of the three fabulous modernist buildings in the same Barcelona city block which gave it the nickname '
Illa de la discòrdia' which means '
block of discord". This nickname arose because because the modernist buildings did not compliment each other very well with all the architechts and wealthy owners competing for the spotlight.
The other famous modernist buildings in this city block of discord are
Casa Batlló by Antoni Gaudi and Casa Lleó-Morera by
Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Guided tours of Casa Amatller include visits to the entrance hall, to Antoni Amatller's photographic studio and tasting of
Amatller chocolate in the original kitchen. Inside Casa Amatller is Cafe Faborit which is a cafe specialising in chocolate based drinks and products. The cafe also serves coffees and teas, healthy salads and sandwiches and fresh juices.
